35 years ago the first duty free zone of the country started operations in a rented warehouse on Patricio Lynch Street in the city of Iquique. Not long after, it moved its operations to the El Colorado quarters, a large sandy extension at the city's suburbs. 35 years have passed since its beginnings, when nobody thought of the radical changes and new times it would offer to the city of Iquique.

35 years of deep transformations not exempt of hard times, consolidations, and successes. It was hard to think that these grounds would see the birth of a large Industrial District, the warehouses at the Enclosed Area, its public warehouses, administrative offices, and goods outlets known today as the ZOFRI Mall. As time went by, ZOFRI became the best partner of Iquique, the main regional business drive, an invaluable source of employment, and a world of opportunities for the development of business, tourism, transportation, industry, and telecommunications. It also became the benefactor of the municipalities of the Regions of Tarapaca and Arica Parinacota and the driver of social development of each of their districts.

35 years ago, the Iquique we have today was unthinkable – thriving, always growing and strong. ZOFRI, the most important pillar of the regional economy, transformed the city into one of the most important business centers of the continent, a business bridge and meeting point between the markets of Asia and South America.
